Hun stilte is nu oorverdovend
“Ik heet Neda, ik ben een jonge vrouw uit Teheran. Op zaterdag 20 juni werd ik op straat in mijn woonplaats doodgeschoten door de Basiji militie terwijl ik op zoek was naar mijn verdwenen stem.” Iraanse Facebook-leden deelden deze zin met hun vrienden op het sociale netwerk en velen veranderden hun persoonlijke profiel: “Mijn naam is niet meer …, maar noem me voortaan Neda”.
Ik schijf nu anderhalf jaar om de week een bijdrage voor dit blog. Ik schreef over mijn stad Teheran, ik probeerde een beeld te geven van de samenleving en de mensen door te schrijven over mijn dagelijkse beslommeringen en een beetje inzicht te geven in mijn persoonlijk leven. Door persoonlijke omstandigheden ben ik nu niet in Iran, maar ik blijf schrijven en delen wat met mij gedeeld wordt tot ik daar zelf weer ben.
Wie mijn verhalen gevolgd heeft, heeft misschien wel door hoe mensen – waar ze ook wonen – overal hetzelfde zijn, ongeacht hun cultuur of politieke systeem. Maar als ik in Nederland of België met mensen praat, kijken sommigen me aan alsof ik van een andere planeet kom. Ik heb nog steeds heel veel uit te leggen.
Mijn buitenlandse vrienden, ook degenen die mij al heel lang kennen, stellen me steeds dezelfde vraag: “Waarom hebben jullie Iraniërs toch steeds de behoefte om iedere buitenlander te vertellen dat je anders bent dan je lijkt?”
Ik denk dat ze nu het antwoord hebben gekregen, net als al die anderen die misschien dezelfde vraag hadden. Ik denk aan al die journalisten en filmmakers die tegen me zeiden: als je zo ongelukkig bent met het politieke systeem, waarom verander je dat dan niet? Waarom pikken jullie dit? Ik hoop dat ze nu door hebben waarom.
De ogen van de wereld zijn gericht op Iran. Hoe er ook over wordt gedacht, ze kíjken.
Mond gesnoerd
Iran heeft de journalistiek zo de mond gesnoerd dat iedere Iraanse burger een journalist geworden is. Niemand van ons had ooit kunnen bedenken hoe nuttig de mobiele telefoon zou zijn. Ik herinner me een collega, een oudere man, die grapjes maakte over ons jonkies die het saaie oude exemplaar vervingen met een nieuwe. “Je hebt toch een telefoon om mee te kunnen telefoneren? Waarom gooi je je geld weg voor die moderne met een camera?” Ik sluit niet uit dat hij er nu ook één heeft gekocht.
Het zou me niet verbazen als Nokia z’n commercials gaat vervangen door een moderner concept, waarbij de telefoon helemaal niet belangrijk meer is: hij staat uit – maar wordt gebruikt voor de foto’s, om geschiedenis mee vast te leggen. Mediagiganten als de BBC en CNN maken ruim gebruik van die amateur-opnamen. CNN is wanhopig op zoek naar een Iraniër in Californië voor een interview. Ze interviewen Iraniërs die het land 30 jaar geleden verlieten en die daarna niet veel verder kwamen dan de productie van wat ranzige video’s en goedkope muziek. Ze spraken zelfs met Iraniërs van de tweede generatie, niet in Iran geboren, maar wel mooi genoeg om in beeld te komen. Maar waar ik echt misselijk van wordt is onze eigen Iraanse staatstelevisie die Laurel en Hardy uitzendt terwijl het land in brand staat, en die betogers kwalificeert als ‘terroristen’.
Mijn verstand heeft er moeite mee de oude, in traditionele zwarte chador gehulde vrouw als terrorist te zien, omdat ze de paaltjes waarmee ze haar groententuin had afschermd, uit de grond rukt om uit te delen aan betogers, zodat die zich kunnen verdedigen tegen de milities. Ik kan niet geloven dat de kleine winkelier aan het Tohidplein een terrorist is omdat hij gratis fruit uitdeelt aan betogers.

Mijn vriendin Nazy vertelde dat ze na een betoging een lift had gekregen van een motorrijder. “Duizend toeman voor de rit, en als je m’n iPod wilt gebruiken wordt ‘t 1500”. Toen hij haar bij haar huis afzette, zei hij glimlachend: “Maar voor betogers is ‘t gratis!” Misschien is hij wel een terroristenhulpje. Het is ondenkbaar dat er miljoenen terroristen in Teheran rondlopen.
De oude vrouw, de winkelier, de motorrijder, studenten en heel veel anderen zijn stil nu, maar hun stilte is oorverdovend. Ik kan het hier zelfs horen.
Vanuit de Libanese hoofdstad Beiroet schrijft Sander van Hoorn over de problematiek in het Midden-Oosten en alle opmerkelijke gebeurtenissen die hij tegenkomt.
Vanuit Jeruzalem schrijft Monique van Hoogstraten over het conflict tussen Israël en de Palestijnen en het leven in het multireligieuze land.
Reizend verslaggever voor de Arabische wereld Lex Runderkamp verblijft in februari 2012 enige weken in de Iraakse hoofdstad Bagdad en zal vanuit daar regelmatig verslag doen.
Dit is gewoon te erg voor woorden. ”ik moet mijn mond houden of ik ga dood” Ik vraag me af of mensen nu hun mond gaan houden en/of ze alsnog de straat op gaan. Als ze nu stil worden komt het nooit goed en mogen we tegen alles wat ze ons toekennen ”ja” zeggen, leuk of niet het is zo. ECHT TRIEST. Het enige wat ik hoop is dat alle machthebbers in IRAN die het woord hebben en de mensen zo onderdrukken en vermoorden ooit mogen rouwen om hun eigen familieleden.
Met veel respect zie ik wat die jongelui in Iran uitvoeren. Wij hebben natuurlijk makkelijk praten hier in Nederland. Ik wens hen heel veel sterkte toe, een revolutie wordt niet in één week gedaan.

Remember them, and keep fighting for your rights. This regime cannot last. Some time, somehow, things are bound to change.

Dear Negin,
I am impressed by the brave people on the streets of Teheran. They truly fight for their live, not as the fact of the beining of the body but by the freedom of their spirit an the way they value their vote. We are long past by that, we don´t know what it is like to have no vote, or have one, but not being accept and there for denied.
I really believe the Iranian people are people of peace but that you are being used for the will of a few who have the mass of unknowing in their back. It is brave the Iranian stand up, may the Neda become a symbol. One who binds you.

Ik neem aan dat je van je vrijheid geniet in Nederland. Dat is ook de reden waarom ik niet begrijp dat je geen begrip kan tonen voor Iraniers die ook vrijheid willen. Ik neem aan dat je op mijn opmerking gaat reageren. Ik hoop dan dat je je steun daarin gaat uiten voor de mensen die voor vrijheid en democratie vechten. What I’m trying to make clear to you all is that there is a huge difference in media coverage and words chosen by these media of the happenings in Iran in comparison to par example the events in other conflicts. This has an important reason.
It just means that there is another interest than peoples freedom that drives western media and politicians to put pressure on Iran.
Looking at the history, the west has been supporting totalitary regimes as long as those regimes cooperate.
Words like freedom, Human rights, democracy etc are only used to criminalise the other side.
In 1953 the USA destroyed Iran’s democratic system and installed the Shah. Why? because Iran wanted to nationalise their own oil to raise the wealth of the Iranian population.
Iran was being humiliated and the US didn’t give a damn wath happened to the people in your country.
After the 1978 revolution there was a firm protection against imperialistic influences.
The USA tried to free Iranian oil and gas reserves by supporting their friend in Bagdad.
Now again there is a drive to destabilize Iran.
The outcome in this way will be very unlikely benificial for the Iranian people.
If Iran suffers forced regime change than we will see a very pro western Pahlavi/Maliki clone “in power”.
For those who think that I deny freedom and wealth to anyone in this world: you’re wrong.
But I dislike double standards, nationalism, patriotism, blind faith and media indoctrination.

I am in Iran right now, I planned my travels before the elecions. Many in my environment wondered why I would still go to Iran, but I am so happy I did. The Iranian people are the kindest, most hospitable people I have met so far. Yes, I “live” in Karaj right now, far away from all the riots, but come 10pm, I go outside to hear the “Allah Akbar” peaceful protests. My hosts are ashamed of what is happening, but I tell them that they should be proud of what they are doing and the only people that should be ashamed is the government.
We should not judge Iranian people by the actions of this government, but we should salute them for the actions of the demonstrators. I hope in the end, they will get what so many Iranians desperately want: a true democacy.
